My main focus for these pieces was to figure out a way to create portraits of people by not using traditional portrait methods. The concept for each piece is different but the idea of people and their individualism is constant.

My identity as an adopted Chinese girl has been the point of inspiration for my past work. “Somatic Mutation” is a piece that is derived from my past inspirations but is focused on the aspect of where I come from genetically and what genetic traits I inherited that are unknown to me. I chose the DNA structures as well as the red and white blood cells to act in place of my literal form. The colors and shapes interact with each other to create movement because our bodies are constantly working under the skin. Our bodies transition into different stages and forms throughout our lives and I wanted to show the transitions by using color and shape within the piece.

Food Portraits

Acrylic paint on wood

Spring of 2018

The goal of this piece was to find a way to create images of my friends and family without painting traditional portraits of them. My work is concentrated on identity. People have different things they identify with and so, consumption and commodity are major things that identify someone socially. The foods I chose to represent these six people are what comes to mind when I think of each specific person. Because of America’s individualistic society I wanted to give each person a form of identification by creating their name tags. The paintings and name tags work together to convey a small collective of people who are important to me.

My subject for this piece is more about where people’s feet have taken them and the location of the person’s physical body rather than subjects that are based off childhood memories. Feet are the reason humans get from place to place. And so over time you can see the bruises, scars, and the grooming of the feet and those characteristics help push with the idea of passing time.

These characteristics can reveal a lot about an individual because we use observation as way of understanding other people. Everyone is unique in their way o f thinking as well as their physical bodies.
